High Hesket Primary School is the February 2009 winner of a Panasonic breadmaker and a supply of Carrs Breadmaker flour

PUPILS of High Hesket Primary SchoolPUPILS of High Hesket Primary School used global culinary influences to become our February 2009 breadmakers of the month!

Inspired by our online breadmaking module - and breads from around the world - they came up with a stunning array of loaves and rolls.

Once again schoolchildren are rising to the occasion and getting the most out of breadmaking,” said Caroline Dale, marketing manager of Carrs Breadmaker.

“I was particularly pleased that the pupils of High Hesket experimented with lots of different herbs and spices - reflecting different cultures and nationalities.”

Teacher Lynn Maxwell explained how the breadmaking covered several aspects of the national curriculum - including science, technology and design.

“Twenty children in year 6 had great fun designing and creating loaves,” she explained.

“The children investigated breads from different cultures, in particular their shapes and end uses in a meal, the flavourings and ingredients used and the countries they originated from.

“They also carried out numerous experiments to discover the effect of sugar and heat on yeast and further explored the use of these ingredients in the bread making process.”

The pupils even took the trouble to experiment with different ways of storing bread to keep it fresh.

At the end the pupils wrote a newspaper article about the difference between baking bread in a household fifty years ago and today.

Ian Griffiths, product manager at Panasonic UK, was impressed by the children’s enthusiasm.

“This sounds like a really interesting project and the school is a deserved winner of a Panasonic breadmaker and supply of Carrs Breadmaker flour.”

Carrs Breadmaking Education ModuleThroughout 2009 Panasonic and Carrs will donate a further 11 breadmakers and supply of flour to schools submitting portfolios of work to the Carrs Breadmaker website.
